CPRS Accreditation - Background
 

Accreditation advances the CPRS Mission:

  • foster professional interests of all Canadian public relations practitioners;
  • advance professional stature of PR;
  • regulate practice for benefit/protection of public interest.
CPRS Accreditation - Purpose
 

"To assess a member's experience and competence in the professional practice of public relations and to recognize this achievement through the designation of accreditation."

 
CPRS Accreditation - Benefits
 

Presents professional credentials specific to PR. Increases job competitiveness. Provides opportunity to test knowledge/experience, validate methods and philosophies. Provides a professional development/ learning experience.

   
CPRS Accreditation - Process
 

Eligibility

  • member in good standing of CPRS.
  • employed full time in a public relations position for five years.
  • spend at least 1/2 your professional time in PR activities.
   
CPRS Accreditation - Process
 

Three-Part Evaluation

  • Work sample (20%)
  • Written examination (45%)
  • Oral examination (30%)
   
CPRS Accreditation - Process
 

Schedule

  • Sept-Nov - planning/assessment.
  • Dec 1 - application due in Ottawa.
  • Jan - notification of eligibility.
  • Apr 1- Work Sample & Accreditation Fee due.
  • May - Graders evaluate; end - notification of pass/fail.
  • June-Sept - research/prep for exams.
  • Oct-Nov-written and oral exams. Jan - written notification of results.
   
CPRS Accreditation - Criteria
 

Work Sample (last 2 - 85%)

  • presentation, role of the candidate, written language skill, program evaluation.

Written Exam

  • theoretical/practical knowledge, professional ethics, judgment, philosophical approaches.

Oral Exam

  • explore greater depth knowledge of public relations/approaches. Evaluates personal presentation, oral & interpersonal skills.
   
CPRS Accreditation - Final Notes
 

60% in each area to pass. 65% overall to achieve accreditation. RACE formula is stressed. Research, Analysis, Communications Planning, Evaluation.
